By today, every home will have received an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census.
Households can respond in one of three ways: online, by phone, or by mail.
Why Does the Census Matter to Counties?

  • The Census determines federal funding distribution to local communities including $15+ billion to Minnesota. Even one missed person could mean forfeiting almost $28,000 in funding for the next ten years.
  • Census data establishes the number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives. Minnesota is at risk of losing one of our US House seats if we are undercounted in the 2020 Census.
  • State agencies use census data in funding formulas for state aids and county programs. An undercount in your county could mean a decrease in County Program Aid and other program funding. This is revenue the county receives directly from the state as assistance to finance county services.
